Dental Health Tips

Drinking sugary, acidic beverages and choosing bottled water over tap water can have negative effects on your teeth.

Food and Nutrition Tips:  Choosing tap water over bottled water will ensure you’re getting the benefit of fluoride to help prevent decay.  Sodas, sport drinks, and energy drinks are laden with sugars and acids that can erode tooth enamel and should be avoided.  Chewing sugarless gum after snacking helps stimulate saliva to remove food particles that remain.

Oral Health Homecare:  Brushing your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes and flossing at least once daily helps to prevent bad breath and to remove plaque, one of the main causes of tooth decay.  The addition of a fluoride rinse may help prevent decay, and an antibacterial mouth rinse aids in preventing gingivitis and reducing bacteria. In-office fluoride treatments are a great addition to your oral health regiment.

Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease):  When gum tissue is infected, you can be at risk for adult tooth loss.  It’s often painless, so regular checkups are vital to diagnose.  Warning signs include bleeding, swollen or tender gums, persistent bad breath, changes to your bite, loose teeth, and gums pulling away from teeth. You may be at risk if you have poor homecare, smoke or chew tobacco, are diabetic, have a family history of gum disease, or have misaligned or crooked teeth that are difficult to clean.
